Hunter x Hunter se déroule dans un monde où les chasseurs existent pour effectuer toutes sortes de tâches dangereuses, comme capturer des criminels et rechercher courageusement des trésors perdus dans des territoires inconnus. Gon Freecss, âgé de douze ans, est déterminé à devenir le meilleur chasseur possible dans l’espoir de retrouver son père, qui était lui-même un chasseur et avait depuis longtemps abandonné son jeune fils. Cependant, Gon se rend vite compte que la voie à suivre pour atteindre ses objectifs est beaucoup plus difficile que ce qu’il aurait pu imaginer.
En route pour devenir un chasseur officiel, Gon se lie d’amitié avec le médecin en formation Leorio, le vengeur Kurapika et l’ex-assassin rebelle Killua. Pour atteindre leurs propres objectifs et désirs, tous les quatre passent l’examen de Hunter, connu pour son faible taux de réussite et sa forte probabilité de décès. Au cours de leur voyage, Gon et ses amis se lancent dans une aventure qui leur permet de traverser de nombreuses épreuves et luttes. Ils rencontreront une pléthore de monstres, de créatures et de personnages, tout en apprenant ce que signifie être un chasseur.
